Hi All,
I'm hoping you can help me identify this fine feathered fellow as he/she has got me stuck! I spotted him last week in bushes next to the local canal in Nottinghamshire. He didn't seem to be part of a flock at all but otherwise I didn't see any particular behaviour. I was thinking it was some kind of Bunting but the slight yellow colour has confused me.

the bird in your photo's appears to be a Lesser Redpoll in my opinion. Well done for getting the photo's, this helps when trying to identify a mystery bird.

Oh sorry ignore me listen to buzzard & brenda they know their stuff. That site is really useful for identifying birds though, it has songcalls on aswell.

I don't know this particular group and who is actively ringing with them. I happened to find this particular article on identifcation of Redpolls when asked about seperating them. I found it extremely helpful when trying to explain the differences, there is a lot of literature out there some better than others!

The Red patch on the birds head is a giveaway.

Lesser Redpolls have a small black bib and double pale wing-bar.

Note the warm ginger brown cap, white underparts and good flank streaks.
