hi,
a couple of these birds have appeared in my North Wales garden - they look a bit like a dunnock and kind of like a non yellow siskin (both of which do appear; the siskins only appeared last year, briefly, from January onwards). Some have a slight red 'blush' on their head and/or breast (but not like in the pics of redpolls in my many books) and they tend to eat just from the niger seed feeders at the mo
im pretty sure that its a redpoll (or a twite, or a linnet?), but not 100%, so any help would be appreciated!!
Hi culintg, welcome to the forum.
Brilliant photo's of what appears to be Twite.
The below link will give you a very interesting read on the identification of Redpolls.

I'd say it was a Redpoll. I've been looking through my books and have zoomed in on your photos for a closer look and Redpoll would be my guess, but I'm struggling with it in all honesty! The more I look I'm thinking Twite.
Sometimes if I look on Flickr at other people's photos of birds if I'm stuck for an ID - especially since they don't always look like the illustrations or photos in books.
Hi guys,
this is DEFINITELY a lesser Redpoll :)) You can clearly see the red 'poll' on the top of it's head.
Twite is a more buffy, and heavily streaked finch with a yellow bill.

Hi,
having zoomed in I note the red 'poll' is not visible- my mistake - but the bird has a black throat patch which Twite never has.
:))

Hi seymouraves, I totally agree with you having looked at the photo's again with more open eyes than last night.
The black chin and bib on the lower photo, certainly have all the characteristis of a Lesser Redpoll.
I didn't notice any Red Poll on either photo, and based the Twite identification on the top picture.
I think the light or angle of the bird isn't giving any clues with regards to the crown. The primaries, secondaries, tertials and coverts all show that of a Lesser Redpoll.
As I've mentioned in other threads my computer is quite old and any enhancement or enlargement gives quite a blurred picture which makes some Identifications hard.
I would agree that they're Lesser Redpoll's
Hope this clears up my first thoughts, sorry for any confusion.
hi guys, thank you so much for your time- im glad its not just me trying to work it out!
some of them have more red on than others, but they mainly have a blush, which you cant see in the pics- but i think i agree with you that it is a redpoll?
Again, thanks very much all!

Hi Fran
Agreed to Lesser Redpoll. I could see the Blackish mask over the front of the eye and beak area so it was a givaway for a Red Poll
I also understand that Female Lesser Repolls have less red on their head area, so that could throw a spanner in the works too.

Glad to be of help, as we all are going through a learning experience with birds.
Just keep on with the ID's if you are not sure about them at all.
