hello
spotted this bird a few hours ago on our boathouse roof,managed to grab a few pics through the dinning room widow,so sorry if pic quality isn't great
we have tried looking it up in bird books we have but it doesn't seem to match anyhting in them
can't seem to find anything like it online either so i though who better to ask than the rspb community.
me and my father are keen to know just what this bird is.

Sorry Bigs I should have told you it is a female, as in winter her plumage is whitish under the chin and throat.

To insert photos, If you click on the Insert Media button and then browse you can insert them directly from your computer without having to go through the trial and tribulation that calls itself Photobucket! When you find the pic you want to insert just click to open it and then click insert and it will be there. Hope this helps.

I wonder if it is the same one? The other was in Surrey.

was going to say the closest thing we could find to it online and in books was a grey wagtail
the picture of the grey wagtail in our books the yellow is less vivid and the yellow seemed to reach its breast almost,but it was only a picture of it's summer plummage so thats why we a little thrown buy it maybe.?
i will have to have a look through some of my fathers other bird books to see if i can find some other pictures of the grey wagtail

this was on the coast in essex 200yrds from the blackwater estuary so defiantly a 2nd spotting
it was lovely to see that in the garden today.
don't think i've ever seen one in our garden in the 25 yrs we have lived here
though mostly take coastal walks so mainly wading birds i'm intersted in and photograph...oyster catchers,egrets ect

I can't see the pictures but it must be gray wag tail day out, I saw one in my graden today for the first time... waited for it to come back so i could take a photo but no luck ..always tomorrow

I'm with buzzard as usual :) It's a winter plumage adult grey wagtail. The throat does not seem to be pure white and contrast with the breast so I would say a female. The base of the lower mandible is not flesh coloured so a 1st winter is ruled out.

I actually thought these were pretty good pics of a hard to photograph species. If more grey wagtails visit gardens in winter maybe more and better pics will be the norm:)
btw- the bird matches the illustration in the RSPB pocket guide to British Birds quite well.
