I think its a Common Redpoll but I see no red! what do you think?
The last two photo's taken in the same tree as Bullfinch. this bird is quite a bit smaller.

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
It certainly has the little black bib of a red poll and on the first pic, I'm sure I can see a bit of reddish cap! So I'd say so, yes!! Well done you!! Would love to see one!

I was wondering about the Lesser than the Common Redpoll. It takes a good eye to divide the two birds.
That is another thing to learn here - still to get the knack myself LOL
So what is the difference between the two birds?

Hi,
yup the bird is a lesser redpoll- at least it is until the redpolls are all re-lumped next year or whenever .
The underpart streaks are too diffuse IMHO for common/mealy redpoll :)) and it is overall very buffy, lacking the overall plumage contrast I'd expect from a mealy . If you look carefully you can see red on the crown in the top photo.

John contacted me directly regarding my identification of this bird so some of the replies are not included in this thread.
My identification was that is is a Lesser Redpoll based on the photo's and John's description and also the many redpolls that I have ringed.
The following link http://www.worcesterbirding.co.uk/redpolls_58.html is to a detailed article a fellow ringer wrote a few years ago.
It will give you a clear picture of the difficulties, even when you have the bird in your hand.
