Hi MarJus, I have no idea - although someone will be able to confirm or correct, but it's a great picture.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
I think so yes, 1st summer or eclipse male. A bit strange isn't he.

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
Having just zoomed to 400 - I can categorically say he's having a bad-hair day! ☺

Lol Squirrel!
Thanks John! I couldn't quite make up my mind as he isn't 'exactly' like those in images I've looked at!! Just looked up 'eclipse' as not heard of that expression before! Interesting!
Red-breasted Merganser.
The only other species similar would be Goosander but they don't have as much black on them, also Goosander have a small hook to the end of the bill which this does not have.

hi MarJus
Super pictures on this thread once more
hi ND: I would say that has part of the confusion with the species (RB Meganser to the Gosander) as they look so similar while they swim on the water.
Is there a difference in their head plumage ie one bird having longer head feathers than the other!.Different coloured head feathers? Is it the black colouration you can tell them apart - hooked bill.
Just interested.
Regards
Kathy and Dave

Hello,
i would say a red-breasted Merganser! very funny looking things with that startled look!
RB Merganser gets my vote. The outlandish "hairstyle" does it for me. Drake Goosanders tend to look more neatly groomed.
Every day a little more irate about bird of prey persecution, and I have a cat - Got a problem with that?
Thanks all! :-)
