Can anyone identify this bird call?

Not sure if this will work to attach a sound file, but I recorded this bird call I don’t recognise.

It’s at night, in a suburban area with nearby woodland (not the UK I’m afraid, near Paris).

We know we have tawny owls but this doesn’t sound like them as far as I can work out.

  • I think it may be the call of a fox rather than a bird, cigaline. I found this recording which is described as a "red fox winter bark"

    What do you think?

  • I also thought a Fox

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • Wow - you must have cracked it! Thank you so much. I was actually thinking that it was a barking sound (and even got as far as googling 'night bird that sounds like dog bark' Face palm  )  but it didn't occur to me it could actually be an animal of the dog family.... What a numbskull Laughing

Actually, the reason we were convinced it was a bird was that it was coming from high above our heads, as we thought, in a tree... we also heard it 'fly' up the road in a short space of time. Now we live on a hill and on one side of the road there is a high wall and the steep gardens of the houses in the road above us extend downwards as far as the wall. So I now realise that it is entirely possible for a non-flying animal to have been in the gardens above us, and to have skirted along the steep slope to where we heard it later on. Not only that, but we have seen a family of foxes cross the road from our garden and jump up into the shrubs beyond. So that clinches it!

I'm still extremely impressed that you managed to find that recording. Thank you again for laying it to rest as it was driving me crazy!

  • Thanks for the feedback. Always good to help.
