Hi I wonder if anyone can help I have heard - not seen a bird which sounds like a brown headed cow bird. I have googled it. - and found out they are American? So I don’t think this is possible? I am in Essex but I keep hearing the unusual call. It sounds like a car alarm being activated!! Thanks.
What made you think it sounded like a Brown-headed Cowbird? Is it a bird you are familiar with or was it something the Merlin app suggested.
My intiial guess would be a Starling. They make all sorts of whistles and gurgles and are well known mimics including car alarms.

If you hear it regularly can you get a recording?

actually see if the above link works?
It will most likely be a Starling.
Not sure about a UK bird that sounds exactly like the brown-headed cowbird, but you might be thinking of the starling. It has a wide variety of calls and can sometimes sound similar to other birds. If you're looking for a specific match, I'd recommend checking out recordings online or visiting a local birdwatching forum!
