Quite a lot of small birds have the ability to hover for a short period of time, so what you've seen is not going to be a hummingbird. Do you mean white on the underside of the tail, or at the top of the tail. If the latter then it could have been a wheatear.

no it was bright white round its bum hole only, no other white or colour. The white was pronounced due to the bird being dark colours. The hovering and white bit drew our eyes to it. Husband thought he saw a 2nd one in the cherry tree.

Was it hovering around flowers?

No the cherry tree has shed its bloomage.  But the honeysuckle next to it has a bit of life left in it but no flowers but has gone to green seed. The bird was definitely hovering at superspeed.

That's what I was going to suggest too. Chimes with the honeysuckle - a favourite for the hummingbird hawk moth. They are a lot smaller than sparrows though.
