Nocturnal Bird Call

  • These birds call from sunset to sunrise right through and have been calling (it seems) to one another from trees in farmland in Northern Ireland. This is in Summer (July). In the twilight I have seen one flying and it seems a rather large bird with a light underside.

I am so curious to know what they areBlush

  • Hi gcoco,

At first I thought it might be a juvenile Tawny Owl but it didn't sound quite right and furthermore they don't occur in Ireland so we can rule that out.

I was intrigued so did a bit of research and I think it may be the begging call of juvenile Long-eared Owls. They do occur in Northern Ireland.

Have a listen to this recording from xeno-canto to see what you think

The juvenile call is quite different from the adult which is more of a croak.

I've only ever seen Long-eared Owls once and that was in Hungary so quite envious if that's what they are..
