Caspian Gull?

Hi, saw this gull at Staines Reservoirs. There was a record the previous day of Caspian Gull which is why I'm asking.

  • Hi Rishaan, google lens agrees Caspian Gull !   Personally I don't know how reliable this answer is but it will bump up your post so that others can see it!

  • Im not an expert on Caspian Gulls but I live by the sea and would suggest it's could be a juvenile gull (all that brown mottling on the rear feathers). Caspian's tend to be grey mottled as adults. You could check out https://gull-research.org , they focus on gulls and have tons of photos. If you get a definitive answer will you let us know?

  • Thank you Wendy! My Google Lens agrees. No definite answer yet though.
  • Hi-

it doesnt look a classic CG to me- but the angle of the photo isnt helpful :(

I agree its got nicely edged tertials but its not snouty and the bill is a bit  short IMHO

Have you got any more photos?

  • I'll just add that I wouldn't rule out a Yellow Legged / Herring hybrid..

  • Thank you! I'll check out the website today. I've got quite a few answers but still nothing confirmed yet.
  • First image is the same bird, only other photo. Second image is another bird. The second image I considered a Herring, but it has a more appropriate bill size for Caspian.

  • Thank you! I'll read it today.
