Caterpillar was approx 4cm long
I'd have thought this distinctive caterpillar would have been reasonably easy to identify.....but my Google Fu skills appear to be failing me. Hence any suggestions appreiated.

Thankyou @ItisaRobbo, and @Germain I was looking at web //butterfly-conservation.org/moths/grey-dagger and there is a really good picture with the white stripes. For some reason, I'd always thought that moth had yellow stripes (Incidentally there is a pic with the yellow stripe on that page as well.
Just shuffling across a tarmac path unfortunately. Was quite smooth, not hairy.
ETA. After mucho searching I'm now thinking sawfly larva?

Without a photo it's really pretty hard - it's not just moths and butterflies - it could be sawfly or beetle or cranefly - have a look at leatherjacket (Cranefly) larvae - they have a habit of coming out of the ground when it's wet and they are a fairly uniform grey and smooth but there is usually more than one unless there has been a flock of starlings about
