For the last week or 2 this raggedy Bird has been hanging around in my garden. Quite often it's sitting on the fence preening itself or else it is sitting on the grass in front of the flowerbed, apparently asleep !
Occasionally it appears to be eating grass as I can't see anything like seeds or other foodstuff in the area it tends to do this.
When it flies off it has all the hallmarks of a pigeon, and with only a lighter coloured band under its fan-shaped tail, appears to be devoid of any other colour.
Image searching so far has not produced a match.

I reckon Hazel is right on this is a young Wood Pigeon waiting for its grown up plumage
