Thank you @Linda257 that's really helpful, I think from what I looked up it might be a small tortoiseshell, and they take up to 14 days to emerge so I'm hoping it's still ok and will survive!

Not a problem...we do have one or 2 butterfly experts on here but just tried to tide you over in the mean time ;-)

Red Admiral - will take about 14 days - have you kept it? if so a deep pot with a stick to allow the butterfly something to climb up once it emerges so it can hand and expand the wings

Just checked back on the one I 'grew' in 2020 - I found the cat on 6th August - it was trying to pupate on a curtain, it was fully formed and settled on 14th August and eclosed (emerged) on 24th - it was a warm period

Amazing thank you! I do still have it, I hope it's OK, will it be OK indoors whilst it develops? I will take your advice about putting it in a pot. I didn't want to leave it n the garden somewhere in case a bird got it or something. Should I wet it every now and then with a few droplets of water? What if it emerges during the night and doesn't have anything to eat, should I leave something out for it? (So sorry for all the questions but I would hate to do it any harm).
