Help with small wader

Hello,

A few of these small/medium waders were flying around above me on the North Norfolk coast today. They were calling often.

Best pics I could get! Many thanks if you could let me know what this is.

  • Hi

why isnt it a Green Sandpiper?

For advice about Birding, Identification, field guides,  binoculars, scopes, tripods,  etc - put 'Birding Tips'   into the search box

  • I've uploaded a collage of the 2 photos above with an edited image - so washed out/over-exposed and slightly blurred - of 2 Knots in flight just to show where my original thinking was.

But after reading Seymour's - and Robbo's - suggestions and then looking at my own collage, I can see that you guys are correct i.e. length of beak, head shape and neck markings, wing shape etc etc

Sorry 'most probably' correct - added disclaimer :)

Regarding responses Robbo, I think sometimes people either don't have an input as they can't figure out what it is, or people don't want to risk a guess and appear foolish (even though no one on here would laugh at them) or (frankly) are too rude to respond (this is usually the original OP who never returns to say 'thanks' or adds their thoughts).

But just remember that there are also people like me - and many others too - that do read your replies and learn a lot from them.

  • Thank you for your responses. Unfortunately I could only get a few quick pics, overexposed as I had been photographing butterflies and these birds came up very quickly (and were gone again). They had very pale bellies and dark-appearing wings but it was midday and very bright. I'm not familiar with knots so it sounds a good avenue to explore so thank you for the suggestion!
