I have seen a bird of about pigeon size but not as upright which was almost lime green with a reddish beak and had sort of round markings on its wings, It is driving me mad. I have seen it on three seperate occasions now, The first two by the rhynes in Rooksbridge Somerset and the third time in Burnham on Sea. I know what I saw but cant find anything that matches it. Can anybody help me please?

Except for the round markings on the wings it sounds remarkably like a rose-ringed parakeet. Did it look anything like this.
They are an introduced species which are now quite common around London particularly to the west. This one has been visiting my garden near Reading. I think it's a female. The males have a rose coloured collar hence the name.
If it is one of these I didn't know they had spread as far as Somerset. Hope this helps.

The bird that comes immediately to mind is the ring necked parakeet, but would have thought you may have recognised one. Try this link;

It's a Ring-necked Parakeet. They are quite common in South East England particularly. Look at the RSPB 'website under 'birds by name' for a picture.I'm sure someone on this forum can provide a good photo of one for you too.

Thanks for the prompt reply. It was definitely that colour but I am sure that it wasnt as parrot like as the one in the picture. If I spy it again I will try and grab a photo and put it on the sight.

First instinctive guess would be a Green Woodpecker, since you said it was Pigeon-sized. Was it most of the time on the ground?

Another thing about the Parakeets on the nutfeeder in the picture is that they are very noisy, and like to remain with their own species in a large group
Green Woodpeckers are more solitary birds.

Many thanks to all who have replied. In response can I say that on the first two occasions I saw the bird it was on the groung by the rhynes that go down the sides of lanes in these parts. It was alone on all three occasions the last of which was in a built up area in Burnham on Sea in a cul de sac where it was also on the ground but as I was going to take a photo it flew up into a tree where there were several pigeons but neither seemed particularly concerned with the other. I know it was more woodpecker than parakeet but I still dont think it was exactly like the photos shown.
