Hi guys, I was trying to take some photos at a local Heronry but light and grey sky never worked right so I sort of saved it for another day. But on the way back to the car found this pole that had been primed for birds and patience got some nice shots of both Nut hatch and this Tit. Each time I look at it I change my mind so anybody like to add their 'pennyworth' to end my confusion?
Thanks, David
Looks like a Marsh Tit to me, going on the little bib.

Hello Dave,
Agreed, I'd definitely go for Marsh.
Glossy cap, with narrow nape.
Cheeks darker towards rear.
Squareish tail.
But then again......
ID between these is so fuzzy that unless you are very confident in Willow you should go Marsh just on the numbers! Its around seven times more likely.
For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
Hi,
it's not bull-necked enough for Willow

Hi David,
As confirmed by other members the bird in your photo is a Marsh Tit.
There is a number of criteria that can be used to seperate the species, the easiest way to seperate them is by call.
There are numerous threads within the forum, were Seymouraves and myself and a great deal of other members have given a great deal of advice with seperating the species.
I personally don't go with the numbers or visiting feeders criteria and don't oppose those who do, as mentioned in another thread the European numbers of Willow was far greater than Marsh. So would we say it was a Willow Tit!
I know the numbers of Marsh are approx 8/1 in their favour in the UK.
It is not easy as both species often have each others characteristics.
The following criteria on the photo's can be used if you can get a good enough shot of both species!

Thanks Buzzard,
I think that puts things straight! So it's off to find a Willow Tit then.
