Hi all,
I've decided to do some housekeeping and clear off alot of my photos but also try and catalogue the birds I have seen. My iding of waders is pretty grim at the best of times and there are several that I'm not too sure on. I thought I would come to the best place and ask you brill people to point me in the right direction. Be warned my photos aren't great, they were taken some time ago when we had just got the camera.
Photo 1 - Black or Bar Tailed Godwit?
Photo 2 - Curlew? (sorry rough photo) but then there's the 3rd photo which I'm also saying Curlew but it looks completely different?
Photo 3 - Curlew? but beak seems different to the second
Photo 4 - are they Knots?
The catalogue is only for my reference but I would like to get it right so I'll know in the future.
Many thanks
Kerry.
Regards
Kerry

Hi Kezmo,
1. Black-tailed Godwit. Note the longer legs, less recurved bill than "Barwit", and plainer non-breeding plumage.
2 & 3. Curlew. In 2, the bill (shorter in males) appears straighter due to the angle.
4. Knot (Juveniles).
Hope this helps.
Hi mickycoop
Thanks for your reply and confirmation especially on the Curlews as they were proving difficult for me. I have other photos of them and they all look slightly different. The other thought was that I might have a Curlew and Whimbrel but after reading realised we don't get Whimbrels in the area at the time I took the photo.
Thanks again. :-)
A pleasure.
mickycoop is on the mark with the ID's.

Nature Is Amazing - Let Us Keep It That Way
Hi Kezmo
I would have been a tad confused myself with the Whimbrels, and the Curlews. The two birds are a lot different size wise. The Whimbrel is a lot smaller (6 inches smaller), so that is some comparson between the species
Just to say I also love your Male Wigeon with the Cream Blaze and the Chestnut coloured head and neck.... that you have included in your first picture too. Well done!!

I don't know one non-garden bird from another as yet, but your photos are lovely, and I do love your last photo in particular.
Cheers, Linda.
