Spotted today dabbling below weir at Monkton Combe near Bath. Looked rather like female garganey - similar bill patterns - but pinkish legs. Very vocal - disyllabic call like a high-pitched 'ker-WAAAHH!' (second syllable higher) - sounding bit like cross between cat and duck, or possibly gull. Smaller than mallard, larger than teal. Quite tame so probably escapee or hybrid??? Distinct pale patches on wings when flew, and flew fast. Sorry, no picture! But would know it if I saw it again....
White flashes on wings - was it a wigeon?
Failing that, maybe a forstar petrel. ;-)
