Just a Kestrel isn't it?

Wouldn't turn round and I suspect its a Kestrel- if someone could clarify I would be grateful.

  • Oh dear....

My gut reaction was female Merlin 'cos it's showing a certain dumpiness that I wouldn't normally associate with a svelte Kestrel. The upperparts look uniform brown but the photo resolution doesn't allow for honest assessment of spottiness. (I'm full of technical terms tonight folks).

Tail length? Difficult angle to accurately judge IMHO.

The frontal markings look coarse to me like they've been applied with a paint brush rather than a felt tip. I'm going to stick with Merlin. (Other small falconidae are available).

Every day a little more irate about bird of prey persecution, and I have a cat - Got a problem with that?
