Snipe-common or jack

I saw a snipe at my local reserve the other day.  It was bouncing.  Does this mean it was a Jack snipe, or do common snipe bob as well?  This was in south west herts.

    Hi,

Jack snipe bob almost continuously while feeding,  common snipe bob occasionally- did you see the bill length?

  • Hi,

Well, yes.  Had really good views for a long time, but not really sure.  Didn't have a book with me, and when I looked it up at home I was leaning towards Common, but then read somewhere about this bouncing business.  But if you say Common Snipe bounce abit too, then I think I would plump for Common.  They have been seen before at this location.

    Thanks

  • Hi Toadflax, welcome to the forum.

As both species bounce, it is somewhat difficult to give an answer based on this one criteria you have given.

Seymouraves has raised a question regarding bill length!

The Common Snipe has an extremely long bill, angled down. Boldly striped head with cream centre, dark brown back with long, broad cream stripes. Barrred flanks, white belly and streaked breast.

    Size 10-11in wingspan 14-17in

Normally visible at the edge of a tussock of rushes or on the edge of a marsh feeding.

This link gives good close up views of a Common Snipe

The Jack Snipe has a short bill. Striped crown with black centre, very dark on upperside. Striped, green-glossed back. Streaked flanks and short greenish legs.

    Size 6-7in wingspan 12-14in

Jack Snipe normally feed in dense vegetation in wet places, which makes it very difficult to see. They are normally seen when they are almost trodden on and only fly a short distance before dropping down again.

    Hope this helps!

    Regards Buzzard
