I visited Fisher's Green near Cheshunt, Herts the other day and photo'd this bird. It was the same size as a Robin and was mixing with Robins; Blue and Great Tits. I cannot find it in any of my (RSPB) bird books. Can anyone help in identifying it? Many thanks Graham

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn...

HI Sarah, Um, yes - I can see it. Unless I have done something wrong and others cannot!
It looks like a female reed bunting although not sure about the black splodge on the head (the male has a black head but not quite like that!) Maybe it's one of last year's juvenile males?
Pics are random on here at mo!

I thought Reed Bunting too or even a Redpoll but it is the black eye patch that is fooling me.....
Oh no pictures gone again

Hi Graham C, welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately your photo isn't showing!
The forum has had a few issues over the months with photo's showing, then not showing.
If others can see your photo I'm sure it will be Identified.
Regards Buzzard
PS the only other thing is to edit your post, remove the original photo re-install it then repost it!

Hi Graham and welcome to the RSPB Forum
I think that MarJus has hit the nail on the head
I think it is a Juv Male Reed bunting due to the strong white markings at the base of the neck

Hi Graham,
your photo is now showing it is indeed a Reed Bunting.
As far as sexing the bird, ideally you would need it in the hand.
It does appear to have more characteristics of a Male!
The following link will give you a detailed description and help with identification.
