Hi everyone,
This afternoon a bird landed on the top of my bird box - the sound of it landing was picked up on the microphone. However, nothing entered the box, but the bird began to call. I have no idea what species the bird might be, and was wondering if anyone could help identify it. I recorded it and put it on Youtube with a video of an empty bird box. (Very messy bird box - blame the blue tit rooster and his mate who hasn't been to clean the box for 6 days. She will get the sack if I see her!!!) I know there are plenty of people on the forum expert in bird calls, and hope someone can identify it.

Hi Sparrow, I can't decide what it is. I do hope you find out, though, as I am curious now.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
Hi Sparrow, I'm no good with bird calls yet, I only know whats singing or calling if I can see, not much help I know, sorry.
There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.
Hi Sparrow
I don't know for sure either. I seem to hear that song fairly frequently and I have many blue and great tits. I wonder if it might be one of those.
Best wishes Chris

I wish I knew what it was. The bird sounds a bit distressed as though he has lost someone!
I can hear Sparrows chirruping in the background for definate.
Funnily enough to call makes me think of a Sparrow, as he was trying to connect with others of his/her species.
The call reminds me of all the little quirky two/three tone calls I hear while listening to my own Sparrows while I lay in bed {first thing in the morning}

Hi Blackbird,
There are certainly a load of sparrows chirruping in the background - the microphone is very sensitive and picks up sound from several gardens away sometimes.
Do you think the call is a sparrow? Could it have been a blue tit?
I first had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn't 1st April. If it's a bird I think I would suggest one of the finches. Greenfinches, chaffinches and even siskins have some quite wheezy calls. Another suspect could be a starling which as we all know can make a whole range of weird sounds.
However, do you think it could have been a mouse or some other small rodent. The microphones on these nest box cams amplifly the sound considerably. What do you think, could a mouse get up there?
Whatever it is, I think you may need to provide some TCP along with your other offerings. I think it's in need of a good gargle.

Hi TJ,
LOL ... you are stealing all my 1st April jokes!!! Are you serious that it might not be a bird?
Before I switched on the record button, I heard it land on the box with a thud, as the blue tits do before they go in the box. That was no mouse thud, more like a bird landing. I was fully expecting a blue tit to go in the box, but all I got was the pathetic sounding call. Mystery.
Might be a sparrow as the calls are an SOS to the Sparrows in your background of your video. If you listen hard see if the chirrups are in tune with your bird. Compare the tunes.
IMHO.....Blue Tits are not strong communicators compared with say a Great Tit
Mind you Great Tits have a powerful call over a Blue Tit and it is very prominent to anyone walking close to a tree with a calling Great Tit.
Maybe that is what you heard. It is an open door yet here to consider!

I guess if you heard it land then it must be a bird but it's a very strange sound. Maybe it's Mrs Blue Tit complaining about the mess that OH has left in the house. Does that strike a chord with anyone?
