Help!!!! Has Mrs. Chaffinch been visiting my garden unbeknown to me?
I think she has been disguising herself as Miss Sparrow, lurking in the conifer bushes with the real sparrows, posing for photos, and sticking her tongue out at me for well over a week. I was delighted this morning when I first spotted her, and submitted a post saying she was the first Mrs. Chaffinch to visit me. Spurred on by a sparrow photo posted by Littleowl, I had a look through my sparrow pictures this evening - and there she was!!! I took this picture on 21st February along with several others of the sparrows in the same bush, and diligently filed it away in my sparrow folder. I'm not seeing things am I?
Cheers, Linda.

Hi Sparrow ,
That does look like Mrs Chaffinch,I can see the white on the wings.Ive posted you another pic on the other thread of my Sparrows.

It's definitely Mrs Chaffinch. They do look quite similar to Mrs Sparrow from head on. It's really from the side and when they fly you can see the wing details.
Well spotted now though
Sarah
I've learned that I still have a lot to learn...

TJ hasn't been doctoring your pics again though has he. The position on the tree looks a little staged and unnatural?
Hi Sparrow
Yes, that is a Mrs Chaffinch with those 'white' wingbars.
Brilliant that you have another type of bird species in your garden.
We have Chaffies here but they are they are thin on the ground considering they are a numerous bird species.
Regards
Kathy and Dave
I'm going to stick my neck out and say you were right first time with your assumption that it was a female house sparrow - I say this because although we can only see a very small portion of her wing, what we can see still doesn't show anywahere near enough white, and it looks to be the wrong pattern to be a chaffinch. The head is also a bit too broad.

LOL Bramble, I promise you the photo is the genuine article this time. I cropped it so you could all see her better, but that's all I have done. She does look a bit odd, I must admit.
So, we have a difference of opinion at the moment!!

Yes I still say chaffinch, but I cannot profess to be an expert and have actually never seen them side by side. the chaffinches at mums all fed on the ground and looked huge compared to the siskins, but mum does not get many sparrows and the one she had were mostly males. I have many sparrows but no chaffies to compare.
These are shots of the females chaffinches at mums
Not sure these help, Sarah
