What is the difference between No-Mess Sunflower Seed and ordinary Sunflower Seed
I see that there is a thread about Wilkinsons Sunflower Hearts on here at the moment too - by Veggie!.
We visited The Lodge, Sandy yesterday - we bought a bag of the normal Sunflower hearts, and noted that the no-mess Sunflower Hearts where for sale too. We have never bought them at all

As far as I can tell, the hearts are simply Black Sunflower Seeds without the black husk on them - of course I could be wrong but that's what I thought they were. They're 'no mess' because the birds don't have the husk to take off and discard.

there are ordinary sunflower seeds and hearts.
Hearts have the black case removed and are a lot cleaner my birds love them but are dearer than the seeds with the case still in the seed.
I buy mine in large bags at £21. 50 and they come from China and my supplier also sopplies pet shops.
I'VE FED MY BIRDS FOR A FEW YEARS WITH NO PROBLEM.
the normal seeds with the cases on cause a lot if waste and if not cleared regularly couse a mess and smell.
You can buy dearer but to be honest your wasting your money. I'me sure thatbthe RSPB who buy in bulk could do theirs cheaper and therefore sell more.
Regarding wilkos and BM who sell small bags but cheap, I buy these when I need to if I've run out etc.
They aren't as clean and have bits straw and casing mixed but thats no problem to the birds

Sunflower hearts are sunflower seeds with the outer casings taken off.
Sunflower seed presumably has husks on, No-mess sunflower seed presumably has no husks on.
If one label says 'No-mess sunflower hearts', and the other says 'sunflower hearts' surely they contain the same product?

I use only sunflower hearts as they seem to be suitable for most garden birds including some insect eaters. I put them in the blender to chop them into small chips and find that doing this prevents a lot of wastage due to the birds taking one bite and then dropping what's left.
