Hello,
My favourite bird is the goldfinch and I am desperate to have them visit the feeders in my garden. For several months I’ve had a couple of feeders out of sunflower hearts (the feeders have 4 & 6 perches) and I also have a nyjer seed feeder. I can hear them often from my back garden and see them sometimes in a tree a few doors down from my house but am yet to see them visit my feeders. Does anyone have any tips please?
Thanks,
Laura
Thank you! My lawn is about 7x7m, I’ve been contemplating sticking the feeder currently on the right in the middle of the lawn as I’ve read that some birds also like feeders that are completely open. Do you think that’s a good idea or keep both feeders close to the bushes?
It’s worth a try. Sparrows and blue tits like to flit from hedge to feeder and back so they would prefer closer to the hedge but as goldfinches stay on the feeder while they’re feeding I think they prefer a clear view all round.
Hey, was going to suggest the same thing. The other feeders are very close to the trees and the top of the house where predators may be. If you move the goldfinch-feeders towards the middle of the garden I would think it could work much better.
But just to caveat , this probably won't be an overnight fix, so probably let it stay in the middle until the end of summer.
Last year my goldfinch activity didn't pick up until late summer, as they feed on seeds, so they have their younglings much later.
Please do update us on how you get on!
I'm in a similar situation where last year I quite a few goldfinches but now they've reduced to 2 or 3.
I have had the same feeder stand in my garden for one year. (Has several feeders on it. Nijer seed, sunflowers, peanuts, fat balls etc) On Saturday I moved it to the centre of my lawn due to fixing a fence panel. Today after 16 years of feeding the birds and always having feeders on the edge of the garden two goldfinch came in my garden! I'd definitely say it's location. They must like it in open space. I'm not moving it back.
I had regular visits from Gold finch, they came for years but the past few years, 2, they have just stopped. I still pop one feeder full of nyger seeds in hope they will come back. I moved the feeder for a few months and suspect the local cats visiting my garden didn't help, so I would deffo say location is key, hopefully now my feeder is back to normal they will decide to come back to me. I'm sure with patience, you will get a visit. Nyger seeds were there favorait.
Oh that's wonderful! I've moved mine to a more central position now and hopefully in a couple of months I'll be back here with a picture of some goldfinches
I moved one of the feeding stations to the centre of my lawn a few days ago and today I had a visit from a male and female greenfinch, a first for me! Not a goldfinch but making good progress
I am lucky to have the goldfinchs visiting my garden to eat the dandelion seed heads but am envious of your green finches. Hopefully you will soon have some goldfinches too.
Fantastic to hear! Really happy for you.
The goldfinches will come!
Greenfinches look gr8, would love to have some in my Garden.
