Is it safe to add oats to cooking fat in a pan to make fat balls for the birds ?

The fat should be pure lard and not anything left over from cooking other foods, also a good idea to add some birdseed and currants for added bulk and goodness!

Lard (pork fat) goes rancid more quickly that beef fat/dripping. It also melts more easily.

One of the things not mentioned as to why frying pan fat is not suitable for birds is salt - either from the fat used or from the items cooked - so as yummy as bread fried in bacon fat is to us it's really not good birds as their kidneys cannot process the salt also fats that have been heated by cooking tend to oxidise and go rancid quite quickly.
