Finches couple?

There is a tree in the backyard of my house where a nest out by a couple of Finches birds for the last few months.

But they haven't laid an egg yet, so I want to know, Finches doesn't give birth in the summer?

  • Hi Bill,

It depends - first on the type of bird - some like Blue tits only have one brood a year, Goldfinches can have 2 to 3 a year so will breed through the summer as will Blackbirds and Robins. Weather and food supply - availability of wild, natural food will affect how many broods can be successfully raised - nesting season is regarded as being March to September

The other thing to note is that it is an offence to interfere with a nest, this includes trying to get close to see what is in the nest

  • I will endorse Cin's reply, particularly the last sentence.

Not only is it illegal, but getting close enough to see will also disturb the birds, whatever species they are, and if there are any eggs, they will abandon them for fear of predation. Even if you mean no harm, the birds don't know that and survival without fear will take precedence.

  • As said basically best left alone and viewed from a safe distance
