Nest box siting

I have had advice in the past that nest boxes should be placed with the opening facing around north to east (away from the prevailing wind). How crucial is this? A new box (25mm hole) I am putting up (well away from another 25mm box) will only conveniently site facing north north west, giving a free path in, and good access for me to clean out etc. Does this matter?
  • Hi Nick, I would think the birds will still use the box as it is towards the North rather than south which would become too hot during the late spring.   The Blue Tits are already inspecting boxes in our garden as they are quite picky on choosing the right location but sounds like your box has a clear flight path in and out which will help.  Only time will tell but good luck and hope you are able to enjoy watching them raise a brood.      Btw,  guessing you don't have any Woodpeckers in your garden but if you do then it is advisable to staple quarter inch wire mesh around the sides and underneath of the box and add a metal hole plate cover to the entrance.

  • Thanks Hazel. We do have an occasional visit from Greater Spotted Woodpeckers to the feeders, but there has never been evidence of nest box damage. This new one has an RSPB 1" metal plate over the hole.

  • Hi Nick,  hopefully you will get a pair of birds nesting in that lovely box and the woodpeckers will stay well away, fingers crossed.   In case you need to protect the boxes, the mesh works very well indeed.   Good luck.

  • HI Nick, my boxes are north, north west and have been used, so they should be fine, enjoy.
