Hello Jennifer and Welcome from me up in Caithness. The bird you saw was it a greyish/white and black wagtail. They are the Pied Wagtail. We get them up here, so maybe not so uncommon in Aberdeen.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Hi Catlady. Thanks for the response. However, I'm 100% sure it wasn't the pied wagtail. Definitely grey and yellow, not black and white. I think it was female as the yellow areas were to the front and rear and not along the whole underside.
Hi Jennifer, here's a photo of a grey wagtail we are lucky enough to see in our garden each day (in Cheshire) Do you have water around your garden as they tend to come to pond areas ?

Hi Jennifer, there's no reason why it should have not been a Grey Wagtail. According to my book and the BTO trend maps Grey Wagtails breed over most of Scotland, including Orkney and Shetland, given suitable habitat. In winter it appears they vacate the colder areas and retreat to more sheltered areas of the river valleys and coastal regions.
The way to distinguish between the sexes is that the male has a black bib under the throat which is white on the female.
Nice bird to have in the garden.
Post Edit. I see Hazy has introduced you to Wilma. LOL

lol Tony !! everyone has to meet Wilma, she's the meet and greet welcome mascot lol
Thanks for all the replies. It's the bird in the picture so I'm glad to get confirmation it's a grey wagtail. There's no ponds very nearby but I'm between the mouths of the River Dee and River Don so plenty of water habitat nearby. The range map I have is minuscule but after looking again more closely I see I am at least in their summer range so not as unusual as I thought. It hasn't been back since so maybe just passing through. Cheers. Jennifer
Have you a photo please
Sorry Keith. After I realised it might have been outside of it's usual territory I had my camera at-the-ready by the window but I haven't seen it again since Christmas week.
I've got a similar bird in my garden in Llanelli Wales
