Fadulla Caged Mealworm Feeder - graphic content - WARNING

I would like to make you aware of a problem I have encountered with the above feeder. Today I looked out my window to the garden and saw a magpie attacking a bird in the caged feeder. There was frantic flapping going on. I ran out to scare the magpie away. I was met by a heartbreaking sight. A Siskin had been caught by the neck by the magpie who had obviously tried to drag it out of the cage. The Siskin was still alive but there was a lot of blood. The saddest part was its buddy - watching - making a call from a tree a couple of feet from the feeder. I carefully got the little bird out of the cage but the kindest thing was to put it out of its misery. Very sad and so easily avoided if it had not been in the caged feeder. I know nature can be cruel but without the cage the Siskin would've had a better chance of escaping. I have taken the feeder down and it will be going into the bin. I'd rather deal with bigger birds than be responsible for a small bird becoming trapped, panicking inside a cage while being attacked. So just a warning to others if you are thinking of getting a caged feeder or that type of thing. I certainly won't be using anything like this again.
  • Sorry to hear about the trauma you had to deal with today Frog, that must have been awful for you. It Is such a a shame, we try to do our best to help the wee ones get their fair share from the big ones and still they get attacked.
