Hi Simon, welcome to the forum from Cornwall! Nice to hear you want to feed your garden birds. I started feeding garden birds 6yrs ago-for me it took a while to find what best suited my garden and surrounding habitat. I live on the edge of town on a modern housing development which has fields and woodland nearby-I get birds such as Sparrows,Tits, Robins,Magpies,Chaffinch,Jackdaw,Woodpigeon and Blackbirds. Sparrows/small birds like cover for safety from predators,and the magpies and other birds I mentioned seem to prefer to feed in the open on the ground. The setup in my garden is I have 1 feeding pole close to laurel/conifer bushes for the small birds with seed,fatballs,peanuts,suet pellets. A 2nd feeding pole for the magpies etc with open feeding trays, and a ground feeding tray used by the woodpigeons,collared doves. I scatter crumbled fat balls, suet pellets,mealworms & currants on the grass in the open for the magpies,jackdaws,crows etc and some under the bushes on the edge of the garden for the Blackbirds. It's advised to provide water for drinking/bathing too.
I'm not suggesting you go to these lengths,(takes me at least 1/2hr or longer each day to maintain the regime I've established),but I hope it gives you some ideas.I would see what you attract and go from there -beware it can be addictive though,lol! I'm sure other forum members will offer their advice and experiences too.

Cheers welsh lass! I live in a town in staffs and the nearest field is about a 1km away and theres not much woodland about so not expecting a great deal. I will see what happens and post it on here!
You'd be surprised what birds you can attract in a town, or small space.Look forward to seeing what you get - it can sometimes take a little while for birds to find and gain confidence to use your feeders,so worth bearing that in mind too

I guessed that would be the case! I had a woodpigeon earlier that took some nuts and a blackbird was having a look but didnt venture to the feeders he sat on the fence checking it out!
2 species is a good start! They'll come especially if there's a cold spell. Maybe tempt the Blackbird with some soaked raisins/sultanas on the ground,they love these. I have a male Blackbird that comes into the utility room for breakfast every morning during winter,they can be very tame
