Does anyone order their bird food by Mail Order?

Hi there

Dave and I have discussed this subject a few times now

We want to know if anyone uses mail order to buy their bird food at all, and is it better then buying it at a shop.

What are the pro's and con's

Regards

Kathy and Dave

  • Hi Kathy

I buy from both sources, I buy online when I buy in bulk as you seem to get a better deal but then I'm really naughty in that when I go to places where bird food is sold I can't help picking up a bag or two even when I have plenty sitting in the shed.   It's one of those must have items for me to be honest.

It's very easy to buy online so convenient and when you order over a certain price bracket they tend to throw in freebies or deliver free of charge - whether this is false economy I'm not sure.  Also you don't have to be at home to get it delivered, you can have it delivered to your place of work like I do without extra cost.  I know this isn't a problem for you as you work from home but it does make it more convenient.

  • Hi
I have just received a 12.5kg bag of sunflower hearts from Jersey plants direct and they are the freshest I have ever had. When you run your figures through them they feel very slightly oily not dray and the birds are demolishing them. £26.39 with free delivery. Price about average but the quality is superior to what I have bought previously.

  • I'm a bit like Kezmo. I order all my necessary food on-line from two or threee different places, but am always tempted by bits and bobs locally. (These are the things I have to smuggle in with other things so hubby doesn't notice). It is much cheaper on-line because you can buy in bulk - enough for a month or two or more. It is usually next day delivery and in my case they are told to leave it outside the front porch if we are out. It is normally well packaged, and so much more convenient.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Hello Blackbird

We buy in bulk from G + M Growers near Biggleswade - not too far from you I think?

They have a good variety there and the prices are good.

  • Hi Kathy

I buy quite a lot of my food by mail order as it's cheaper and you can get really good quality.

Some are better than others for P&P costs but you need to calculate the total cost for comparisons.

Sadly (if I dare say this on here) the most obvious one has quite expensive P&P compared with others, and it is fixed no matter how much or how little you spend, so it never comes out top in comparison prices.
