Hi Stephen,
I had this problem and glad to say no longer do.
I got that heavy duty plastic mesh with the gaps at about 50x50 mm with 4 fixing poles and made a sort of enclosure with it.
The mesh is sturdy enough that you can make a lid out of it and it won't collaps if say magpies sit on it.
everything is held together with velcrow .
I move it every 2 weeks for hygiene reasons.
You can get ground feeder cages but I wanted something bigger. I regularly have about 20 small birds in at a time, especially when I put the mealworms in. The pigeons and starlings disapeard after 3/4 days. If you want blackbirds to come in the spacings have to be a bit bigger.
Hope this helps
Regards

Many thanks, Purdy. I will have to construct something more suitable than I have at present. At present my feeders hang from silver birch branches.
If you want to keep large birds of your haning feeders have a look at Chaplewood squirrel blocking cage.
I got them in Amazon at a better price than shops.
As long as you have the traditional haning feeders with a flatish top they work really well and you can still hang them on the tree. Good luck :0)
