Hi guys,
Can you settle and argument once and for all. In out garden we get alot of goldfinches. Its great watching them chatter away in the bushes and squabbling on the feeders! However my nieghbour swears they are called 7 coloured linnets - Which I know was an old name for 'something'
One of my mates I go birding with says a 7 coloured linnet is an old name for a redpoll. Now I'm totally confused.
Personally I think goldfinch is 'sevener' but who knows?! My nan used to call pied wagtails 'jack jumpers'!
Is there any other nicknames for some of our common birds?
Cheers

Never heard that one in connection with Goldfinches although they are very colourful. Seems unlikely for Redpolls as they only have a red poll and a pink blush on the male but what do I know.
I think there are lots of local names for birds depending on what part of the country you come from. Yaffle springs to mind for Green Woodpeckers and Throstle was a name for thrushes but I can't remember whether it's for Mistle or Song varieties. I'm sure there are loads more.
