Mealworms Alive or Dried?

Hi everyone, I am thinking of possibly feeding live mealworms (not very sure how i will do this as i'm not too keen on maggots n' there pretty similar) but i am able to feed dried mealworms atm which they get everytime i fill the feeders.

For those of you who serve alive mealies, what do you need to know? where do you get them? are they really smelly? i've heard there expensive to constantly buy in so best to breed your own, how do you do this (this is on the asumption that i can bare to deal with the alive mealies lol!) What do you do when they bugs turn into beetles? do you feed them the beetles too?

I've been reading that alive mealies are better for chicks, as i have a blue tit in my box atm, i am hoping s/he will nest and have a wee family, so would like to help them along n' provide best for them. I also have 2 male robins (guessing this as they keep chasing each other from my garden) n' they like mealies too. (Also is there any way of getting these robins to share my garden? i know there very teritorial, n' my garden seems to be on the border line of each)

before i think of breeding mealies i will try and buy some n' see if i can stand being near them, (it took me a couple of days getting used to the dried ones) but any help and info would be great. As would be keeping them in shed (once tidied and re-arranged).

Thanks Lucy

  • My mealies arrived on Saturday morning in a white sack in a cardboard box... I had a screaming headache & my lovely inquisitive boy overnighting  but thought I had better deal with them, so I got the container & opened the sack ... instead of finding an egg box inside, there were four crumpled sheets of this (which I think should have read - silly bird people!)

The mealies were all caught up inside!!!   Needless to say it was extremely difficult to shake them all into container first go ... here are the first few I had to pick off the dining table & floor

Was eventually successful (but the dustpan brush were working overtime!)

Then had to decant my eggs so that they could have use of the box

Sliced up some carrot for them & got myself more tea & paracetamol & carried on answering some of Byron's thousand questions!!  Just a run-of-the-mill Saturday morning, I guess!! Lol

  • Wuw guys thats alota mealies, yea wallk to work is only bout 40mins there n same back, but im often in car too so can always swing by.

Well im a bit late this morning as still in bed but can hear the squad bickering outside, think there either on the roof or on pillion lines above house, as not as "loud a squabble" as whn they reach the garden lol.

Well i guess i must like my mealies to help them change lol, well better get up as have alot of mouths needing fed!

Have a great Christmas everyone (and to ur birdies and mealies-since there the topic) im going round on my blue 4x4 sleigh with pressies to deliver- nothing better thn a last min dash before for xmas lol.

P.s. I hope whn i order mine they dont come in paper, or my dog will be playing with any that drop on the floor- the mealies fwacinate her lol

  • Wee Update:

Just ordered 250g of Live mealies... Oh i will have happy birdies. Finding it hard to give mealies to any of my other birds because as soon as i walk out the door and go back in (i don't even go near the feeder...) The Squad (Starlings) are back down with force, Tried hiding dried mealies under some bushes, other side of garden etc but the squad manage to guzzle the whole lot, so when my birdies do appear there is no treats left, if i stay in the garden some of the squad still come and feast.... Any ideas on how to giv my other birds the treat without the Squad always eating them all? They were never this bad until they realised i had alive mealies... lol! I do love my Squad tho! Just wish they would share.

  • Yes, it's a big problem keeping off the garden gannets. You are going to need some sort of protection to keep the larger birds from your expensive mealies whilst still allowing the small birds access. Some people have used wire mesh hanging baskets fastened together to form a globe and then suspended. The problem is getting just the right size mesh that will keep Starlings out.

There are plenty of ground based guardian feeders available but they are mostly designed to keep out larger birds like pigeons or squirrels. The trick is to find one that will exclude Starlings.

A couple of years ago I bought one designed for mealworms. I can confirm it works and frustrates the hell out of Starlings.

I can't remember where I got it from so wasn't sure if it was still available. Eventually, I found a supplier here.

Before you splash the cash you might want to experiment with something cheaper.

  • Be careful with feeders like this, birds on a feeder like this move down them and if the wire narrows and they have their head through it they can get caught I had a round one and found this out, if you look at the picture Tony has posted the narrow part is at the top so they wont get their head stuck and possibly break it with struggling to get free :(

  • Thank you both I will "Experiment" with what size a whole starlings can get in/out off and keep in mind to keep narrow bits at the top rather than bottom. I will try first with chicken wire, As its fairly small and remember at my grans a dog run made of it, the robins n' little birds were always able to feed in safty in there (when dog wasn't in it food was put up so cats couldnt get the birds)

  • If you’re thinking of making your own then chicken wire sounds ideal I have made a fat ball feeder with this.

  • Hi, I have just got a new batch of mealworms from wiggly wigglers (I think) and have put them into a clean sweety box like i did with the stater 50g i got before christmas. I have noticed that a few of the mealworms are white... any reason for this? they look healthy, have they just shedded there skin n' will go darker again like the rest? or is there something wrong with them? They are now in bran with sliced potato and have egg boxes in them.

    Thanks again guys!

(As to feeding to smaller birds, i am thinking of just buying that gardian feeder and attaching it to the fence in the tree so wee birdies can have a treat) I am also getting up earlier and putting a few out before its light so my blue tit n' others who are awake before the starlings can have them :) )
