Hi everyone, I am thinking of possibly feeding live mealworms (not very sure how i will do this as i'm not too keen on maggots n' there pretty similar) but i am able to feed dried mealworms atm which they get everytime i fill the feeders.
For those of you who serve alive mealies, what do you need to know? where do you get them? are they really smelly? i've heard there expensive to constantly buy in so best to breed your own, how do you do this (this is on the asumption that i can bare to deal with the alive mealies lol!) What do you do when they bugs turn into beetles? do you feed them the beetles too?
I've been reading that alive mealies are better for chicks, as i have a blue tit in my box atm, i am hoping s/he will nest and have a wee family, so would like to help them along n' provide best for them. I also have 2 male robins (guessing this as they keep chasing each other from my garden) n' they like mealies too. (Also is there any way of getting these robins to share my garden? i know there very teritorial, n' my garden seems to be on the border line of each)
before i think of breeding mealies i will try and buy some n' see if i can stand being near them, (it took me a couple of days getting used to the dried ones) but any help and info would be great. As would be keeping them in shed (once tidied and re-arranged).
Nice video too MC strange why I never saw your until I posted my reply ?

Hey TJ, Yea my gran has one of these its fab, but the windows in my rented house are crossed all over n' the seal has gone so is steamed so wouldn't get the best of views :(
But have thought of trying it as would get better pics than standing inside trying to get a photo of birds at feeder - they end up with a smoky haze, n' can hopefully place somewhere that the window lines dont get in the way. (whoever thought this style of window was a good idea was seriously wrong! n' land owner i doubt will change them :( )
This is what they look like>>
Leaded windows were the in-thing years ago but are horrid to clean.
yea tell me about it! can't get rid of the marks :( wish some kid would "accidently" kick their football through it!
Mealies Update- Ok i don't find them hard or difficult to have n' handle, so there getting kept
On Saturday, put some mealies out in a tub (as i didnt want them to wander away before birds came) - as for once when filling feeders not one bird was around but it was a VERY windy and VERY rainy day so i wasn't surprised. so i waited... and waited... and waited....
after a couple of hours i saw my site forman Mr Robin, so got really excited! well he hopped onto the ground and under the bushes then flew off (last i saw of him) usually if theres something "new" he's checking it out but wasn't interested..
so i waited some more... saw a wee chaffinch n' thought it may have even a look..... NOPE nipped onto bush beside and picked fallen seeds off the leaves
So waited even longer... (by this point i was fed up tbh spent about 4 hours waiting) decided i'd sit in jeep as get a better view (n' darkened windows), so waited in jeep... couple sparrows arrived! got hopes up, well they just went to seed feeder above and then retreated into the pyracantha n' then disappeared
Noticed The Squad (Starlings) lining up on the power lines counted 34 of them, was now ready for the horde...they never refuse any kind of meal...they fluttered and pestered each other, and then....flew off in other direction.
Well i gave up! as i had to get some work done in the garden as well as in the house etc. but left mealies out for anything that would want them.
Sunday- Woke up in morning to very heavy rain (sure it was going to go through the glass) so got up n' then remembered about mealies being left in plastic tub...went out the lot of them were floating in water...darn! Poor things...(yes i felt sorry for them, so tipped them out onto the feeder and somehow they were all living...Can they "Swim"?
Didnt have time to watch constantly but all were there until later on sunday (i think the Squad had been for a visit... but feeders hadn't been touched so maybe someone else?)
Will put out some more mealies tomoz morning but wont be able to see who takes it as i have work but hopefully on weds whoever is taking them i will spot them :)
How frustrating for you LL but don't forget how suspicious birds are of new feed containers of any kind!! I have taken delivery of 250g of the little 'cuties' (ha ha!) Who are now languishing in their large container dining on finely sliced carrot but only until I take delivery of a clear plastic window feeder which is quite small & hopefully will deter the 'Mobster Starlings'!!

Yes i am hoping that if i put out mealies tomoz i will see some around on weds :) Since it is cold i will chance not putting in tub, but will have tub close by so that they get used to it. If i hadn't been running late this morning i would have put some out, The Forman was calling at me from the near tree, think he was saying i was late and where were these mealies he was hearing about... wasn't too chuffed lol! but i am going to make an online order with the company you use and just order 250g n' just hope for the best lol! as i think by weds my 50g will have been completely used up. (better not let there be a shortage for too long or the Forman will set the Squad and the Mob on me haha!
Added a few to sunflower seed/suet pellet/raisin mix in the ground feeder hoping Robin would get there first! He came ... hopped down ... took one suet pellet & flew off ... Eejit!! Then came the Starlings ....!
they never do as expected lol! Starlings would have been delighted n' nothing would have been left
Glad to hear you’re keeping them Lucy, and I’m sure once your site Forman finds them he won’t stray far :)
