Too many sparrows I love em but ....

Hi everyone, new on here. I love feeding my garden birds and watching their antics. But I have a huge flock of sparrows whose thuggish behaviour scares off the green/goldfinches. I guess I created the problem myself by asking hubbie to put up roosting boxes for them, I live in the far North of Scotland where there are few trees. Now we have sparrows nesting in every crevice on the eaves of the house. I 've tried different foods, different feeders, but nothing seems to work.

Oh thanks so much for the recipe. That would cut down on cost because it is getting silly the amount I'm spending on bird food. I will certainly give it a try.  Does it matter How much flour you put in, I guessing not too much?

I use a ratio of about one third fat to two thirds dry ingredients. You can use all flour if you like but personally I use approx half flour to half blitzed up sunflower hearts/peanuts. Don't add too much water otherwise you'll end up with a sticky mess - just enough to hold it together. If you've got a food processor or similar it makes it easier to prepare. Mold it into whatever shape you want, wrap it in clingfilm and pop into the fridge for a couple of hours to firm up. I roll mine into a cylinder so it goes into my mesh feeder. Some people just stick lumps of it on tree branches. Good luck, I hope it works for you.

PS Starlings will gobble it down too.

  • Hello Sandra and a warm welcome from me, also in the very far north of Scotland! How far north are you? Like you I have a flock of sparrows and starlings, more varieties starting to return now that it is getting colder. Saw a goldfinch this morning. They do love all the treats that we put out to them. The pastry is a big hit, and it will soon be time to start making it, now that it is colder. They love it! Do enjoy being on here, you will meet lots of lovely folks, see beautiful photos and get help from all the knowledgeable folks if you may need it.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
