A device that will cut Sunflower hearts in half?

Hi Everyone, I need to find a device to cut sunflower hearts in half as the birds (Golden, Green, Great and Blue) bite half of the seed in two then one peice lands on the floor whilst the other they eat. The area is very messy at the moment. I was thinking of using a food processor and give a 5sec blast to chop the seed in 2. Thanks for reading. Regards Zeussrapidfire
  • Hi Zeuss.

When you mention Sunflower hearts are you meaning full sunflower seeds with the black husks on them? The birds will open these up and drop the husks which can leave a bit of a mess. With the sunflower hearts which have already been de-husked I find that there is no waste at all as the birds eat the whole heart/seed and any that are dropped are soon eaten by the ground feeding birds. I tend to buy 'no mess' mixes which although they're a bit more expensive due to the additional processing, they do save me a bit of time in cleaning below the feeders. I have a blender which I use to chop up whole peanuts but if you put sunflower hearts into it it tends to almost turn them into a powder. I hope this helps you a bit.

  • Hi Paul,

Thanks so much for your reply,

The ground feeders won't go near the dropped seed due to close by a bush and cats tend to hide in there.

Hard situation to be in lol.

  • I don't think there is a device that can do that.

The birds do make a mess so I put a tray beneath the feeder to catch the seed.

It's not always easy to hug a hedgehog.

But that doesn't mean you shouldn't.
