Wondered why we were going through a box of 40 fat balls a week.... Then I saw this chap today!!!
Shane I know how you feel. Yesterday I filled up all the feeders. I have a log feeder that takes 6 fat logs, they are like fat cigars. Crows love them as well as the fat cakes and balls! I even moved the feeder where only the little ones could get to it,but no at early light I could her them and almost all gone. Grrr.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I think you may have to either get a feeder with a guardian (shopping.rspb.org.uk/.../feeder-guardians.html), or get creative with some chicken wire to give the smaller birds a chance!
I have the same problem, my jackdaws are eating me out of house and home and keeping all the smaller birds away. Plus I live in a flat and the neighbours might not be too impressed by the noise! I've tried the guardian feeders and it kept them at bay for a while, but they got too good at it. At the weekend I bought a Squirrel Buster, a feeder that's weighted so that it closes when a heavy bird lands on it. But with persistent flapping they can decimate that too. Any more suggestions?
There is a company called Wingaway, who sell bird alarm cries and they have one for Jackdaws (tapes and CD’s). The alarm cry should disperse the Jackdaws from the area, and hopefully solve your problem. You can contact Wingaway on 01249 890317 or via their web site at www.wingaway.co.uk
Thank you Debs. I'll look into it!
No problem
I've come to a compromise with them as I didn't want to completely exclude such beautiful birds. I've got one guardian cage and left one standard feeder. Hopefully everyone's happy and our fat balls last just a little bit longer now.
Great compromise, and as you say they are beautiful birds to see close up
