Not a bird in sight...advice please!

Hello all For the past couple of years I have attempted to feed birds in my garden, but without too much success - all I attracted were magpies, wood pigeons and grey squirrels. The squirrels ate almost everything in sight before anything else had a chance to find it, and they also broke feeders which was really disheartening. So, this year I thought I'd give it another go...buoyed by advice from a work colleague about squirrel-proof feeders I duly purchased a couple - one for peanuts and one for seeds - hanging them in a tree in the garden, along with a mesh fat pellet holder, 2 weeks ago. Since then, I have seen literally not a dickie bird! It's sort of encouraging that the squirrels don't seem to have been attracted (yet!) but nor has anything else. I've often thought that there doesn't seem to be an awful lot of small garden birds where we live (a fairly green Birmingham suburb) but I'm really shocked not have seen anything at all, and the food remains completely untouched. So, does anyone have any advice for me please? Should I just be patient? Is 2 weeks not long enough to expect birds to find my food? Any tips or advice will be gratefully received! All the best Sarah

    Hi Alan, thanks for your reply.

    I do hear birds singing in the morning, but not really very close by.  Throughout the day I can hear robins & blackbirds but again not in my garden they tend to be a way off.  I know they're out there but how do I attract them to my garden?!

    I did have a look at those feeding stations like the one you've linked to, but I thought if I couldn't get birds to come to feeders in a tree they'd be even less likely to come to something like that out in the open - is this not necessarily the case?
