I can't help you there JMRG but I will be very interested to see what others think as I have a huge flock of redpoll come and feed on my nyger seed throughout the winter as well as the goldfinch (although the goldfinch tend to go for sunflower hearts if they can get to them!) All I can say is that these little birds look well on it, and must need quite a bit of fat with all the flying around they do and to keep them warm. They also have a relatively short life span (1 or 2 years is it - I'm no expert) so possibly if any damage does get done, it's not going to happen all that quickly is it?
Those are just my thoughts, but like I said, I will be interested to hear other peoples views.
