As the girlfriend doesn't like the idea of live mealworms I've always bought dried worms. Now spring is well and truly springing (witnessed great tits collecting nesting material just now!) it's important to give the dried mealworms a good soak to ensure the chicks get sufficient moisture.
As such... how long and how do you soak your meal worms? I read a blog on here that mentioned overnight but on the packaging it was just for a few minutes in warm water.
Also, the mealies float, how do you ensure they all get a good soaking?
Thanks! Also, any tips on keeping live bought mealies (not breading them!) will be appreciated incase I "accidentally" purchase them :)
Hi John
I would be interested in any answers to you. I soak them also as they say, 15 mins in warm water and they still feel dry to me.
Well I just leave them overnight in an air tight container (old thermus mug that I don't use any more!!) in water, drain (by partly opening the lid) and then put them out for the birds.
They seem to go down just as well as when they're dried so can't objectively quantify if they're getting a good soaking.
And I don't want to pick them up to figure out if they feel subjectively like they've taken on the water... Maybe I should just be less squeamish...
