I saw a pair of bullfinches in my garden yesterday for the first time in years, they were both very plump & the male was such an amazing colour the only sad thing is i didnt get the chance to get a photo of them.My mum & we was so excitted to see them.I was wondering what do they eat ? they didnt go near any of the feeders then flew up into the trees & dissapeared.Havent seen them since.

Hi. I'm new here but have been an avid (if somewhat amateur) watcher of the birds my feeders attract for quite a few years. Would love to attract bullfinches if they're in the area but have had all kinds of food out over the years and not seen one. They're either shy or not resident in my part of England. I keep an eye out though.

hello LiverBird and welcome to the Community from me (in Cheshire); glad to hear you are enjoying watching the garden birds, its always exciting when you see the birds come to the feeders and I hope you can attract a Bullfinch ...... although they eat soft buds/berries in the wild I know that sunflower hearts will be the way to encourage them into your garden so good luck. We are lucky enough to have 3 males and 2 females in our garden and they are always on the sunflower heart feeder.

Thanks Hazy :)
At the moment I have black sunflowers out, along with nyger seed for the goldfinches and a berry suet log in the fat ball feeder for the blue/great tits. It's the house sparrows (one of my favourites) that go for the black sunflowers. No others, though. I'll give the hearts a go. Fingers crossed.
I've been feeding the birds around 4 years and never seen a bullfinch yet. Just planted an apple tree, hoping to tempt them.
