We live next to a field overlooking the sea in co.down. There are 2 buzzards that have been resident on the ground for at least 2 weeks. One never leaves and only flies in short busts of a few metres, close to the ground. There are no trees, only hedges around. Is this unusual behaviour?
I would say no Vanessa60, I see buzzards most days on the farmers posts and they regularly drop to the ground and you can’t watch them constantly they probably feel safe and have found a feeding area that they like and the speed that they fly is amazing and they will usually have a tree close by to nest in at night.
It is only one of them that never leaves the ground…. Our outside light throws light into the field when we let our dog out and we can see the buzzard during the night. Sometimes the other buzzard screams repeatedly as it flies off, but it always returns after an hour or so. They are quite distinct from each other, which is how we know it is the same one that doesn’t leave the field. Before this “residence” started we would regularly see them on fence posts and coming down to forage in the field, but this is very different.
