Wrens

I have recently seen a wee Wren in my back garden that has been a bird missing for some several years.  I have fenced off part of my back garden as a bird and wildlife "reserve".  What can I do to encourage more wee Wrens into it?  I'm in Northern Ireland and believe this breed is an Amber Alert species.

  • Hi Penny, it sounds like you're already doing the right things by providing a wildlife area. Wrens like dense undergrowth and ground cover to search for insects in, so plenty of shrubs and leaf litter should help, and also vertical cover like ivy and creepers. I don't think they visit bird feeders, although according to a previous thread on wrens, they can be tempted by broken up suet balls, mini mealworms and even finely grated cheese!
