I know they're Extremely rare but after googling UK birds all day this one fits the description of what I saw perfectly, didn't have time to get a pic, he took off quite quickly.
I don't think the weather has been bad enough to bring in the US rarities but the bird that causes the most confusion at this time of the year are juvenile Starling - they are a very plain buff grey before they develop their beautiful starry plumage and they can look very odd on occasions. The other one could be a male Black Cap

Thank you for your response. It definitely wasn't a juvenile starling or a black cap. I'm just racking my head as to what else it could have been!

Very unlikely. When you say it took off quickly, was it on the ground when you saw it? Was it with any other birds?
Nof it was alone. It flew from a garden into trees. Ive googled juvenile birds I'm just at a loss to what I saw and it's driving me nuts!
