Wood Pigeon Stole Nest?

Hello - first time poster here!

I had a pair of collared doves nesting in my garden but Mr Jackdaw unfortunately brought that to an end. The collared doves were seemingly nesting again a few days later on the same nest. I go away for a few days and on return there's a fat wood pigeon sat in the nest! They've been building to the nest - it's bigger and there are twigs everywhere on the ground but is this common practice for them to move into someone else's nest? Funnily enough, when the collared doves were sat on the nest before Mr Jackdaw got the eggs, I had seen the wood pigeons in the tree being nosey. Now I know they were probably plotting their invasion!?
