Balding male mallard

I just wondered if anyone could possibly tell me the cause of this on this male? I've seen plenty of balding females at breeding time but I haven't seen it on the makes at all

    Maybe the head feathers are last to moult as they are the least important for feeding and flying. A similar sequence occurs with raptors according to some of our raptor group. Of course it msy just be a case of head lice,need to call the nit nurseBlush
