what is this bird?

We saw this bird sunbathing in our garden last month. It stayed like this for a few minutes and seemed enjoying the sun. Then it flew to the woods our garden backed onto.

  • Hi Tomoko,    looks like a female blackbird carrying out what is referred to as "Sunning" which is part of many birds essential routine which helps maintain healthy plumage,  the birds add preening oil to feathers which also helps rid them of any parasites.    You can read more on the highlighted Sunning link.

  • Hi Hazy, thank you for your reply. We see male and female blackbirds in our garden, but this one seemed a bit different from others. I'll definitely check sunning info. Thanks!
  • you're most welcome, at this time of year following a busy breeding season many adult birds are going through the moulting process exchanging old worn out feathers and growing new ones and juvenile birds are often showing signs of gaining adult plumage so they can look a bit different during these plumage changes. Plumage colour can sometimes vary slightly.
