What does this burrow belong to and who has been digging holes in our garden?

Hello

We have found this burrow in the garden. Does anyone know what creature might live inside it?

We haven't seen it, so it might be that it is only coming out at night. It digs tiny shallow holes all around the garden which are seemingly random. And it has left no poo or anything else around the garden which could give clues as to its identity.

Could this be some kind of bird?

Can anyone help us solve the mystery?

Hi Wendy,

Thanks for getting back to me!
This hole looks bigger than I would think bees would make - but I might be wrong.
The hole is larger than a milk carton top and smaller than a tin - some size in between. I'd say around 5 cm wide.
Do you think this could still be bees and does this explain other parts of the garden being dug up?

As Wendy says , could very well bees, or hornets/wasps but until you can see any activity, we are guessing, it could also be

Voles , Rats , Rabbit, try to look around early morning or at dusk,

Do keep us posted as am sure it will help others, who may be searching for an answer as well.

Hello Lucy, we have a similar hole in our lawn and have spotted Field Mice coming out and scurrying around near the bird feeders. The hole looks far too big to be made by insects I think, so suggest mice or voles from my garden experience. So far this year we have not spotted the mice from the hole in our lawn, so solitary bees etc could now be using it if the mice are no longer present.
